JAPANESE AUCTION GUIDELINES & AUCTION SHEETS

Most Japanese auctions (and some stock dealers) have a grading system which uses numbers and letters to tell the buyer what
condition the vehicle is in. Often on inspection sheets, this includes an overall, interior, and sometimes, exterior ratings.

This system is a useful way to categorize in general the quality of the vehicle while quickly searching car listings.

Overall Grade :

6 - Or above New and never been driven.
5 – Near new.Everything is in absolute top condition. No faults or blemishes
4.5 – Excellent condition Untrained eye probably would not find anything wrong with the car
4 – Very Good condition. No abnormal signs of wear and tear. May have some very minor blemishes
3.5 – Average condition. Car shows average wear, possible dents or scratches.
3 – Various scratches/Dents. Vehicle will definitely show age and paint has probably faded in various spots.
2 – In bad condition. Would not recommend importing unless it’s rare or collectors, etc.

1 – Very bad condition OR has been modified and in good condition. Would not recommend importing.
0, A, A1-A5 – Involved in Accident. If there is a number, higher is worse.
RA or R – Had accident and repaired.
R1 – Repaired modified car
Other Special Overall Grades:
S – Perfectly new.
T – Special Purpose vehicle.

Some R cars might be eligible for import if the accident was minor and repairs we carried out properly, remember that Australia has strict rules and regulations. We will advise if that car will not pass compliance.

Interior Grade:

Most auctions will also provide you will a grading of the interior’s condition.

A – Brand New car. No wear or tear.
B – Very Good condition. Considerably cleaner than the average car. No rips, burns, cracks, etc.
C – Needs cleaning/repair. Average wear and tear based on its age and kilometres.

D – Needs much cleaning/repair. Maybe be missing plastics, smelling like cigarette smoke and interior might be pulled apart if it is track or modified vehicle.
E - Absolutely terrible condition

The Car Diagram:

All inspection sheets have a diagram of the car’s body. There will be a lot of different marks inspectors will place over this diagram to describe what they see. The following is the most common marking scheme:
